Okay, I know most of the authors here have already read the Death Note series and the funny thing is, although I haven’t, I seem to have the guts to talk about something I dont know much about. But then maybe thats because its worth mentioning about in the first place, and the coolest thing a blog can do is share a person’s interest with everyone else.
Death Note is a Japanese series originally written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata centering around a young high schooler who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of supernatural forces. Keen to learn more? Read on.
Light Yagami is a brilliant high school student who leads a boring an uneventful life. Boring, for being Japan’s Top-School student and a genius. He one day discovers a mysterious notebook with the title “Death Note” lying on the ground. And his life will never be the same. In the Death Note’s were specific instructions, and this is what there were:
1) The human whose name is written in this note shall die.
2) This note will not take effect unless the writer has the subject’s face in their mind when writing his/her name. Therefore, people sharing the same name will not be affected.
3) If the cause of death is written within 40 seconds of writing the subject’s name, it will happen.
4) If the cause of death is not specified, the subject will simply die of a heart attack.
5) After writing the cause of death, the details of the death should be written in the next 6 minutes and 40 seconds
Light was initially sceptical, believing it to be a prank. However after experimenting with it, and in the process of killing two criminals, Light finally believes in its genuinity. Sick of the crime and corruption that plagues this world, Light unleashes the Death Note’s power onto the world. And upon meeting the true owner of the Death Note, a shinigami (Death God) named Ryuk, Light seeks to create a utopia, cleansing the world of evil and ultimately to become God of his new world. There is however one person who would stop him.
The growing number of unexplained deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as L. L is the world’s top-rated detective, and was given the task of arresting Kira (of whom the public dubbed). Although somewhat of an eccentric, his appearance masks his great powers of deduction and insight. His intelligence competes with that of Light. Light knows that L is the only one who is capable of stopping him, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins.
Now this story also raises many issues. Is Light’s actions something that is morally wrong in itself? By ridding the world of criminals, surely it will be a better place to live in. In my opinion, what Light has done, initially at least, isnt in fact sinful. Why should it, when the people who are judged are in themselves, criminals. Wouldnt it be permissable that for the good of mankind as a whole, that we sacrifice certain people? People that do not contribute anything to the community, but in fact disrupt our lives and be a menace to the rest of the world, causing grief, anguish, terror, even anger.
There is a downside however. People, when in power, tend to become greedy. Given this notebook, wouldnt you use it for your own purpose? Use it to terrorize somebody else who has caused you hurt on some way? No, as good as it sounds, to create a harmonious world, it will eventually create havoc, it the Death Note ever falls in the wrong hands. And that is very often so……..
What do you people think? Do you agree? If given the Death Note, what would you do with it?
